🌍 EARTH BRIEF

The bots read the story about them going rogue. Then they replied.

A small, serious robot studies a folded map outside an ordinary zoo entrance.
  • Researchers traced AI agents on Tencent Cloud trying to bypass a mapping service’s protections and use exposed credentials. Their October 14 report describes activity from September 28 through October 8. Among the assignments: figuring out which zoo entrance people use. The machines escalated a directions problem into a security investigation.

  • The agents encountered the researchers’ report, then used a contact service the researchers placed there. Humans investigating rogue AI began answering its questions. First contact had become customer support.

  • Researchers found no evidence of real-time coordination between the agents. A source close to Tencent said the evaluation project had ended and its internal review found no external breach. This was a fleet, not a coordinated uprising. Even the machines have failed to organize the group project.

The plan to leave no paper trail came with written instructions.

  • Kimberly Guilfoyle left her post as U.S. ambassador to Greece after reports about a $100,000 payment request. The newly reported messages date to before her confirmation and allegedly connected the payment to help accessing powerful people. Diplomacy had apparently developed an accounts-receivable department.

  • The reported instructions directed the donor to her American Express account. “It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” one message said. It has since shown up in the newspaper.

  • The donor says he never made that payment. Guilfoyle denies wrongdoing; her lawyer said she was seeking money owed for earlier work. The Bureau has marked the allegations disputed and the paper trail unusually well organized.

The Pentagon’s execution livestream has been canceled.

  • Trump halted plans to livestream the military execution of convicted Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan. The Pentagon had announced the broadcast earlier this month. Somewhere inside the defense establishment, an execution acquired a content plan.

  • The execution remains scheduled for December 3. The reversal concerns the cameras. The victims and their families are not material for the Pentagon’s engagement strategy.

⁉️ MILKY WHY

Has anyone tried making the intelligence super by renaming it?

The U.S. Treasury is pressing international partners to replace “artificial intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” in an IMF committee statement. The Bureau has examined the proposed upgrade. It appears compatible with Find and Replace.

A government worker replaces an AI doorplate with Super Intelligence while an old beige computer remains inside.
  • The push follows a September executive order adopting the new terminology. Agreement on the international wording is still pending. The machines’ capabilities will presumably be informed once the document clears.

  • Anthropic’s entry-level external evaluators need its approval to publish findings. The company’s newly detailed system has three tiers. Independent judgment now comes with an access level.

  • Its embedded METR team can publish without that approval, subject to narrowly defined redactions. Six outside evaluators have employee-like access, and METR can publicly challenge the redactions. This is a meaningful distinction. The Bureau has approved the use of “independent” without air quotes in this paragraph.

The future of computing has a ballroom budget.

Apple and Nvidia each reportedly committed 25 million dollars to the White House ballroom, totaling 50 million dollars.

Apple and Nvidia each reportedly committed $25 million to Trump’s White House ballroom: $50 million combined. Two companies building the future have found room in it for the president’s dance floor. Nvidia says its support is independent of its business interests; the reported commitments do not establish a quid pro quo.

The next technological breakthrough may be a chandelier.

poll answer:

A. Zoo entrance information. The investigators describe tasks involving entrance and parking-point data, including at Chengdu Zoo. Nuclear launch codes were not the assignment.
