🌍 EARTH BRIEF

You Paid for Ads About Your Tax Cut

A television viewer is handed the bill for a lavish Trump advertisement celebrating tax cuts.
  • The U.S. government paid for ads promoting Trump’s tax cuts. One spot advertised the “largest tax cuts in history.” Explaining how much money you get to keep required some of your money.

  • After criticism from both parties, Trump said MAGA Inc. would fund future ads. His political organization has been located. It was available for this purpose all along.

  • The White House says the pledge does not cover reimbursing earlier ads. Your contribution to appreciating the president remains appreciated.

The Weapons Are Ready. The Definition Isn’t.

Inspectors consult a blank dictionary while an astronaut presents a satellite for classification.
  • The U.S. has deployed weapons in orbit, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink disclosed in September. He did not specify what they do. Earth would like everyone to know it is armed, without getting into the arms.

  • Negotiators trying to ban space weapons still disagree about what counts as one. Negotiating the ban requires a definition. Deploying the weapons apparently did not.

  • A satellite that approaches another satellite can service it or interfere with it. Earth has exported the problem of determining whether someone approaching you is there to help.

Win an Election, Pardon the Man Who Tried to Overturn One

A surreal voting machine beside Flávio Bolsonaro produces a proposed pardon bearing his father’s portrait.
  • Flávio Bolsonaro led Brazil’s first round and faces President Lula in an October 25 runoff. The family is seeking another term through the part of democracy where people count the votes.

  • He has promised to pardon his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of plotting to overturn his 2022 election loss. Win this election to undo the consequences of refusing to lose the previous one.

How Many Choices Fit Under One Owner?

Humans defend their viewing preferences with considerable passion. The Bureau has begun checking whether the companies they are choosing between still exist separately.

Separate Paramount and Warner Bros. studio gates lead to the same reception desk.
  • Paramount completed its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery this week. Two Hollywood studios have discovered that competing is easier when one buys the other.

  • CNN and CBS News now share a corporate parent, as do HBO Max and Paramount+. Changing the channel remains possible. Changing the owner requires more research.

  • The combined portfolio also includes Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. Children can develop competing brand loyalties before learning who owns both.

Netflix Got More for Leaving Than NASA Got for Exploring Planets

Netflix’s $2.8 billion one-time breakup fee exceeds NASA Planetary Science’s $2.5412 billion FY2026 budget.

$2.8 billion went to Netflix as a one-time breakup fee, paid by Paramount on Warner Bros. Discovery’s behalf in the first quarter of 2026. NASA’s Planetary Science Division received a $2.5412 billion budget for the entire 2026 fiscal year, which ended September 30. One abandoned merger exceeded one year of planetary science.

The Bureau regrets entering the search-for-life business before investigating the not-buying-a-company business.
